Here is some general information about the expansion.
The Death Knight
Death Knights are not new to Warcraft, where Arthas became a wielder of evil instead of a paladin wielding the light. The Wrath of the Lich King expansion will be required in order to play a Death Knight. A series of quests upon reaching level 80 will allow you to unlock the ability to create a new character of the Death Knight class. Although the races that can become Death knights have not been determined it will be made available to both alliance and horde. Continuing in that thread, DK’s will be damage dealing tanks with dark and necromantic spells One source of power will be runes that can be carved onto the Death Knight’s weapon. As spells are cast the runes are used. There are three sets of runes planned: Blood, Frost and Unholy rune. DK’s will have is opposite to a paladin’s divine shield. Instead of protecting and healing it will cause damage and decrease healing effects. And while the death knight is not a pet class it will be able to summon undead to its assistance.
Professions
The Inscription skill allows you to permanently enhance spells and abilities for yourself and other players. This will be done via a spell book where you can change a specific spell. The crafting cap will be raised to 450 and lots of new recipes will be added. Cooking recipes will added that will do more than increase stamina or give your health back quicker. There will be recipes for food that will help you with crits and more food that procs like the dragon breath chili. Bind on Pickup crafting items will also be added. There will be discoveries which will help to individualize professions. And best little tid bit of all, engineers get to craft a flying machine.
Zones
Northrend, the expansion continent, will be roughly the same size as Outland. It will be designed for players who are level 68 and higher. While this is a cold northern continent placed between the northern parts of Azeroth and Kalimdor, it will not be all ice and snow. There will be a variety of landscapes. The main city will be neutral, much like Shattrath, and located near the center of the continent. It’s Dalaran. Finally the big blue bubble gets to be used in theWoW. It will in fact float over the ground and will be accessible from the ground or by flying mounts. Apparently the Kirin Tor got together and moved it to Northrend as a central defense point against the Lich King.As far as flying mounts go, it will be possible to use them in the expansion but not until level 75 or so. This is to keep players exploring the area on foot in order to experience the expansion before flying over everything. Some of the races that inhabit Northrend are the Tuskarr, nomadic walrusmen with Easter Island inspiration. Taunka mean Tauren who prefer to rule the land than live spiritually with it; Vrykul, giant Vikings who get pretty nasty and inhabit some of the dungeons as well and Iron Dwarves.Howling Fjord is one of the starting areas of Northrend. It’s a grassy region that over look cliffs at the southeaster edge of Northrend. Utgarde keep will be locate in the region as well as the Vrykul.
